The American Library Association found that 2,571 titles were challenged last year, an increase of nearly 40 percent over 2021. Many of the most banned titles, including those pictured above, deal with race, gender or sexual orientation.
Has your school or community taken books like these off reading lists or library shelves? If so, which titles were removed? Why? How has their removal affected you or other members of your community?
What is your opinion of these challenges in general? Proponents say they protect students from inappropriate materials and give parents more control over their children’s education. What is your response?
