At Khan Academy, we’re passionate about helping learners build strong, sustainable study habits. That’s why, six months ago, we introduced Streaks and Levels—tools designed to enhance student motivation, maintain momentum, and support long-term academic achievement.

Today, we’re excited to share some insights into how these features are shaping learning behaviors across our community. Spoiler: the impact is both powerful and still growing.

Key insights from streaks data

Half a million students kept their streaks alive—in just one week! That’s not just impressive; it’s solid proof that daily study habits are catching on and making a difference.

️ Learners have clicked into their personalized “Next Up” content more than 16 million times, using streak tracking as a motivational tool for sustained learning progress.

Students engaging with streaks are not only completing more lessons—they’re progressing through learning levels more efficiently than ever.

Why Streaks Work: The science behind strong learning habits

Research shows that regular practice over time helps the brain retain knowledge better—a concept called the Spacing Effect. Streaks tap into that science by encouraging daily learning and offering simple visual feedback that motivates students to keep going, even on tough days.

How to help students keep their streak alive

Daniel De Angulo, Product Manager for Learner Experience at Khan Academy, shares his go-to strategies for keeping a streak going:

  1. Pick consistent days early in the week
Encourage students to choose study days like Tuesday and Thursday to build momentum and leave room for flexibility.
  2. Set a course-level goal
Whether it’s finishing a unit or mastering a course, having a purpose behind each streak can help students stay focused.
  3. Enable Khan Academy streak reminders
Turning on notifications gives students a nudge to stay on track—especially when they’re juggling busy schedules.

What’s working for other students

Families and teachers are finding creative ways to help learners stay accountable:

  • Friendly challenges
Some families and classrooms create streak competitions—adding a fun, social element to learning.
  • Visual reminders
A wall calendar, habit tracker, or sticker system can help learners see their progress and stay motivated.
  • “No zero days” mindset
Many students use a simple rule: just complete something every day. One practice problem is enough to keep the streak alive.

How streaks drive mastery and academic achievement

Khan Academy’s internal research reveals that students who master even one additional skill can experience significant improvements in achievement. Users engaging with Streaks and Levels are advancing more rapidly toward proficiency.

The takeaway? Daily learning, combined with motivational tools, leads to stronger academic outcomes. When students feel empowered, supported, and driven by clear goals—they flourish.

Encourage your learners to start a streak

Six months in, we’re seeing real impact from Streaks and Levels. If you’re a teacher or parent, now’s a great time to introduce this feature to your students. Whether they’re just starting out or already on a streak, a few minutes a day can make a big difference.
